Nashik, An Upcoming IT Hub For Tech Startups ?

Considering the job market in Nashik, one question that would be lurking on everyone's mind from a long time would be that wether Nashik can become the next IT hub for Maharashtra after Pune and Mumbai.

Looking at a few factors, you can come to the conclusion that Nashik has enough potential to become a major IT hub for Maharashtra. Few of the points that we think are of great importance are:

1. Lower cost of living.
2. Adequate qualified human resources.
3. Three-hour drive from Pune & Mumbai.
4. Good infrastructure, railway station, and a developing airport.
5. Good climatic conditions.

Nashik is one of the most popular cities of Maharashtra, it is the wine capital of India, it has an artillery center, a coin printing press out of the only two in India, a growing aeronautical industry and yet it is struggling to make its mark in the IT industry.

It has few of the best colleges of Maharashtra out of which at least 10000 engineers pass every year but when it comes to looking out for funded tech startups in Nashik, it is difficult to find one, while on the other hand, Pune has 100 of it.

Although lately ESDS the company that offers cloud computing solutions have got its first round of funding in 2015, but that's not enough. Winjit Technologies, which develops software, mobiles apps, games and is associated with the Internet of things (IoT), is yet to raise a formal round of funding.

Nashik based gaming company Zabuza Labs who had one of its games, Balloon Bow & Arrow, being listed among the top games by Google is also a small startup that has great potential to scale up.

Significant attempts should be made to attract top IT giants like Infosys, TCS, Wipro so that they come forward and set up their full-fledged IT operations center in Nashik. Companies like IBM have come forward and in collaboration with Sandip University have opened an innovation center in Nashik. Acts like these from top IT giants will really boost the morale of IT students to innovate and start their own companies.

Nashik is a pleasant city to live in. The number of people traveling to Mumbai through Panchavati Express and coming back to Nashik in the night is huge and its just because of the climate of Nashik, it is the ideal place in Maharashtra for tranquility.

But if we compare Nashik's progress in terms of IT development, it's very poor. Here are a few observations about the IT industry in Nashik:

    1. Lack of powerful local leaders -  It is one of the main reasons for the slow IT development in Nashik because to drive any industry you need a powerful leader. It has been witnessed in Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad & recently in Nagpur.

    2. Lack of funded startups - Again count of startups that have bagged funding from VCs is low in Nashik. In fact, only one company has been successful in that after putting years of hard work into it. Also now they are targeting to expand out of Nashik. Attempts should be made to increase this count.

    3. Poor bandwidth and internet connectivity - One of the few things that the IT  companies success relies on is the availability of high-speed internet. It is one of the areas that need to be worked upon.

    4. O
utsourcing based business model - Mostly all of the IT companies in Nashik are having outsourcing based business model, they don't have their product innovated and developed in-house. Due to this, the IT business collapses if one or two major clients pull out.

    5. Lack of international work culture - While Pune IT companies have huge offices and infrastructure the same seems lacking in Nashik. Also in comparison to other cities like Pune and Bangalore, professionalism at work is less in here.

    6. Lack of presence of big IT giants like Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Accenture -  3 to 4 years back there was a news that Accenture had bought 200 acres of land in Nashik to set up their operation center, which was later proved to be just a rumor with zero work on the ground.

    7. Lack of air connectivity - Although Nashik boasts of having an airport, it lacks connecting flight to almost most of the major cities of the country. This can be improved if two or more major IT companies set up their base in Nashik. Increase in the number of travelers will allow the flight companies to expand in Nashik.
So in short, Nashik can become a major IT hub if above-listed issues are addressed well but it could take another 10 years to bring Nashik to where currently Pune is and it could take another 30 years to bring Nashik to where currently Bangalore is.
